As detailed in Global Mining Review’s feature titled “Conveyor Reliability On A Roll,” conveyor systems are a cornerstone of bulk material handling in mining, spanning from pit to port. Yet, despite their vital role, these systems are often among the most failure-prone assets in the mining industry. Their reliability directly impacts operational throughput, as seen in 2023 when a conveyor failure at Rio Tinto’s Kennecott copper mine in Utah led to a staggering 36% drop in production.
From German lignite mines moving 40,000 tons per hour to the 98 km overland conveyor in Western Sahara visible from space, conveyor systems vary in size and complexity. Yet all face common challenges: high mechanical wear, environmental stress, and safety risks during maintenance. Notably, 43% of mining accidents and nearly a quarter of fatalities are associated with conveyor maintenance, highlighting the need for more reliable, safer systems.
