This soothing video comes from New Orleans company Intralox, which initially started up to process peeled prawns and evolved to produce its Activated Roller Belt technology – and an unexpectedly calming YouTube channel.
The motions of the two interacting conveyor belts position the packages in a way that makes them look like a spell has been cast over them.
It’s not magic, it’s physics – which pretty much the same thing without the foolish wand-waving and silly incantations.
In a video on the company’s website, senior engineer Joseph DePaso says the soul-calming formation is the result of careful calculations.
“Everything has been modelled at a very fundamental level,” Dr DePAso explains.
“The package motion you see emerges from that physics-based model.
“When packages interact we look at those forces of interaction and the motion that you see emerges from the summation of those forces in time.”
His explanation of the technology goes on to feature big words and realistic simulations with tiny numbers, but suffice to say he’s some kind of wizard.
The video was posted to YouTube by Intralox in 2014 but is resurfacing from the depths of the internet thanks for a Reddit user who was able to look away long enough to alert the rest of the world to its existence this week.
